Mothering the mother is the core philosophy of Vedic maternal care.  The new mother is recommended to have 40 days of abhyanga massages consecutively from the day the baby is born.  This may be unachievable for most people, however even one session of this deeply nurturing, soothing and calming body therapy can aid the mother in this vital time of healing.  Recovering from childbirth, the mother’s nervous system is in an equally fragile state as her baby.  Considering this, Ayurvedic wisdom encourages the mother to treat her surroundings the same way she would to baby’s - no loud noises, general softness, no bright lights, harsh sunlight, temperatures, no inflammatory foods...
